so sometimes we come upon stacks or shelves of books that professors or whomevers are giving away, and today there was a wealth of mostly-statistics books and as a result i now have a book entitled
A MILLION RANDOM DIGITS
okay without the caps (also in full it’s A Million Random Digits with 100,000 Normal Deviates), but you get the idea.
also i mean apparently everyone can have a million random digits thanks to the joys of pdfs.
I’ve read about that book! It’s briefly mentioned in James Gleick’s The Information. The numbers were generated with “an electronic roulette wheel.” Statisticians later discovered that certain digits show up more frequently than they probably should, so the reliability of its randomness has been called into question. But due to the very nature of the book, the publishers decided that no one would really care and continued releasing further editions of the book without any alterations.

Again, hooray for Archer’s Ibsen wallpaper! This post has made me wonder if you have any preference among Ibsen translators?

a confession i have is...
So, I honestly haven’t spent much time with Ibsen since, oh, 2009ish. But, yeah, Fjelde was my go to translator as well. I ended up avoiding Meyer for the most part, because I noticed that in a couple of his translations he abridged decent sized chunks of the text, and (perhaps ironically) I was in a real “all or nothing” frame of mind at the time. Aiming for completism over quality, I ended up reading a terribly bland Brand, but I can’t quite remember whose it was (might have been our good friend Archer?) But yes, may very well have to take another swing around and try the Meyer out…
On the Archer front, I should note that what little I’ve read of his translations of the prose plays was fairly tolerable. Pretty bare bones, but I feel like that could be an asset, should someone want an out of copyright translation to base an adaptation off of, or anything like that.
I did finally read Shaw’s Ibsenism last year, and it’s kind of a good time. It definitely alternates between, “Hmm good point, Shaw,” and “Hey now Shaw, I’m not quite sure that’s what Ibsen was going for, but if you say so.” I think you might enjoy it.
